Taking the TOEFL Test Online

If you're interested in taking the TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language, you may want to try taking it online.  The internet based testing (IBT) system is comparable to the paper based exam, with a few advantages and disadvantages.  Take the time to review each option carefully before deciding which method is right for you.

What is the TOEFL IBT?

As our society becomes more computerized, a number of standardized tests are shifting from paper formats to electronic ones.  The TOEFL IBT is one such test that takes advantage of the internet as a tool for exam administration.  But despite these advances, you may still need to go to a testing center in order to take the exam.  If the thought of taking a computer-based test scares you, don't worry – you'll find that the electronic system is safe and reliable.  If a technical problem occurs, you'll be moved to another computer terminal, or given the opportunity to take the exam at a later date.

Signing up for the TOEFL IBT

In order to sign up for the TOEFL IBT, you'll need to have access to the internet.  You'll need to identify yourself and provide contact information in order to register for the exam.  You may also need to pay your examination fee using a credit or debit card during the registration process.

Advantages of taking the TOEFL online test

One of the biggest advantages to taking the TOEFL online is that you'll be able to type out your responses.  This will be an enormous help on the written part of the exam, since you won't need to worry about whether or not the test administrators can read your handwriting.

In addition, once you click on an answer, it will be entered in the appropriate location.  Unlike paper forms, you won't have to worry about stray pencil marks that can throw off a computer grading machine, or worry about making sure that answers are marked off next to the right question numbers.  As a result, you'll reduce the time and stress associated with these little details.

Disadvantages of taking the TOEFL online

Unfortunately, it may not be easy to determine how much it will cost you to take the TOEFL online, since each country has a different fee schedule.  In addition, if you feel uncomfortable relying on a computer, you might consider opting for the paper version of the test.  For example, if you'll be going to a testing area where there are frequent or prolonged power outages, it may be to your advantage to go with the conventional paper exam.

Taking the TOEFL exam is an important part of applying to schools in the US, regardless of the type of studies you plan to pursue.  Now, there are more options than ever for taking the exam – including both online and offline versions.  Before registering for the exam, take the time to think about your personal test-taking habits and use this information to decide which format is best for you.
