What is the TOEFL Test?

Today, many people from foreign countries want to study in the United States.  Even though the governments of these countries often pay universities to accept their students into graduate and fellowship programs, students still need to demonstrate an advanced understanding of English.  As a result, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) was developed.

TOEFL Components

As you might expect, the TOEFL exam doesn't necessarily test your knowledge of specific grammar and syntax rules.  Instead, the goal is to demonstrate that you can read, write, and speak English well enough to succeed in a college. Therefore, there are four main sections to the exam – including reading, listening, speaking, and writing.  If you're planning to take the TOEFL exam, consider investing in a study guide that offers practical tips for each of these sections.

Individuals Eligible to take the TOEFL exam

In order to take the TOEFL exam, you must be able to speak English as well as a native English speaker in the 11th grade.  While there may be a wide range of regional variances and aptitudes, you'll need to follow the standard guidelines for the United States.  You don't need to demonstrate course work or prior experience in English in order to take this exam.  If you have any questions about your eligibility, contact the testing site or the test administrator in your country.

Registering for the TOEFL test

You'll need to register for the TOEFL exam in order to take it.  Typically, you'll sign up online and pay for the exam fee using a credit card.  However, you'll still need to bring an appropriate form of identification to the exam center in order to be seated for it.  Read through the pre-testing guidelines carefully and make note of any special instructions or any other items you might need to bring along.  Try to arrive early at the testing center so that you have a chance to get acquainted with the setting.  Once you're checked in to the exam, take a walk around the building to locate the testing room and the nearest restroom.

Fees and Locating Testing Centers

When you're registering for the TOEFL exam, you'll be able to choose between a paper format and an electronic one.  Regardless of where you're located, the paper exam will cost $150.00.  Unfortunately, there is no set price for the electronic version – you'll need to check the guidelines for your specific country in order to determine the cost.  In addition, you'll need to find out where the testing center nearest to you is, and what dates and times are available.

There's currently an enormous amount of competition for entrance into college.  Aside from competing with others from your nation of origin, your application will also be compared to individuals who use English as a primary language.  That said, universities are also aware that secondary English speakers may be just as capable of succeeding in their studies.  The TOEFL exam can help you successfully compete with other applicants in a wide range of degree programs.
