MPRE - Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination
The Multistate Professional Responsiblity Examination (MPRE) is a multiple-choice exam. The exam consists of 60 questions that you must complete within 2-hours and 5 minutes (125 minutes).. It is administered 3 times a year in participating jurisdictions. The regular fee for the MPRE is $55. The late fee is $110.
MPRE Basics
The MPRE covers the ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct (CJC), the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct (MRPC), and generally accepted rules concerning the legal profession in the U.S.
Of the 60 questions on the MPRE, only 50 are scored. The remaining 10 are beta questions that may or may not be used in subsequent tests. The beta questions are not marked so there is no way of knowing which questions are scored and which are not.
The questions on the MPRE contain factual information along with a question and four possible answer choice. Each question only contains one correct answer.
The MPRE may be taken before graduation from law school. It is not administered with the rest of the examination.
MPRE Jurisdictions
The MPRE is administered for admission to the bar throughout most U.S. jurisdictions. Currently only Washington, Wisconsin, Maryland and Puerto Rice do not use the MPRE for admission to the bar. Each participating jurisdiction may set its own minimum score for acceptance into the bar. The passing scores vary from 75 up to 86.
Please refer to the jurisdiction you are seeking admission in for further details on the particular requirements you must meet to prove competence to practice. The MPRE is only one of a number of requirements for admission to the bar.
MPRE Scores
MPRE Scores range from 50 to 150 (the highest possible score). The average score is 100. Since the tests vary from year to year, MPRE scores are scaled. Therefore, a score of 100 on a more difficult test will be the same as a score of 100 on an easier test.
MPRE scores are sent out within 5 weeks of the test date. They will also be sent to the jurisdiction you request on your answer sheet. Your score report will include your scaled score along with the jurisdication your score was sent to.
If you provide an email address with your online registration, a link to your score report will be emailed to you. If you did not provide an email address or you registered via the paper application, then your score report will be mailed to the mailing address you provided.
